A Tree Once Planted

by Debra Wendt

Life is learning to know what is needful
a quiet understanding
raucously pursued –
a tree planted;
where did it stand in Eden –
alone upon a broad plain or one among many
beside the paths of rectitude –
cupbearers:
high of trunk
rooted deep –
dewdrops wait
the eager leaves impatient to unfurl,
an oak avoids the rapidity of other leafing trees
its canopy of limbs open to stars
and nesting birds dreaming of flight
releasing abundance in its season,
a whispered testimony
that once realized –
