Psalm of the Ordinary

by Andrew Taylor-Troutman

The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof
~ Psalm 24:1

I sing of the ordinary!
Of chairs, pillows, bedside tables,
yawns, giggles, and a looooong stretch;
of T-shirts, lamps, backyard swing sets;
of afternoon snacks, welcome mats,
and water — the most typical
is also the most essential.
This psalm is not meant to dampen
enthusiasm for grand events
and festive celebrations;
but to make music like crickets,
or rain showers through leafy trees —
soft, repetitive, almost unnoticed;
yet grateful and glad-hearted that I did.
