A Poem for Mama

by Craig Zulu

I know,
Childhood is a rough terrain
For a mother to navigate
For her children
But she has inner
Resources of strength
God-sent
Through
The happiest recollections
Through sighs of relief
Through
The night of sorrow
I could see
Her eyes moisten slightly
But a smile
Played across her lips
In sunshines and shadows
She told me
“Son, l can do anything
So you can be the best
So l won’t write a poem
When she is singing
With the angels in heaven
I write it now,
A poem for Mama.
