“Wash me, and I will
be whiter than snow.”
Psalm 51:7
I am mystified by David’s description, by the shimmering splendor of his cleansing. Is anything on earth whiter than snow? When the slash of lightning cleaves the darkness, is that the piercing gleam? Are we instantly transformed, from filthy to dazzling clean. One moment breathing the consequences of destruction, the next the unbelievable brilliance of forgiveness. When Jesus’ face blazed with sun-brightness at His Transfiguration was this purity what David longed for? The identification not with his sin, but with incomparable spotlessness of a relationship with Him.
