Silent Cemetery

by Wesley Sims

Silence hangs over the cemetery
adjacent to the little country church,
a Sunday morning holy pause,
as if the dead wait in reverent
attention for Reverend Jim
to begin preaching or Irvin
to begin playing the piano
or Grandma to start praying
or Dad to lead the congregation
in the stirring classic hymn,
When the Saints Go Marching In.
