O Spirit

by Caroline Allen

O Spirit of clear mountain air,
Of cascading streams, teeming pools,
Lion, ligament, atom, hare,
Of wild wisdom and holy fools.

O Spirit lapping on the shore,
Hid in each sparkling grain of sand,
Revealed in fungi, woodsy spores,
In warblers’ flights and tree ring bands.

O Spirit of God’s grandchildren:
Creators, artists, and architects,
Skyscrapers, monuments, gardens,
Where nature and art intersect.

O Spirit living everywhere:
Primordial fire and office chairs.
