“Here I am.”

by Danielle Kinchen

He called on me again.
This time I thought
I’ll say something different:
“Here I am. What next?”

And the clouds cleared.
I didn’t know what I was looking at,
but I knew
it was deep
and it was rich,
and I was hanging in it.
I nearly forgot myself.

I think it was my first taste of joy,
sipping from the Sun, as it was.
And I shook rustling
from a wind in my soul.

From my seat,
I watched the random come webbed,
and I knew all those white joints I saw meeting
were for Someone Else to hold together.
I got up, and I thought,
“I can walk my line.”
