Ascension Day

by Linda Barrett

They gathered together
with the one whom
taught them from the prophets
showed them great miracles
from raising the dead,
healing the sick
calming storms at sea
He, the one who rose
from the dead
when they all thought
about returning to their nets
as former fishermen
that One comforted them
while they cowered in
the upper room.
400 of their new followers
joined them
at the Olive mount
telling them to wait in
Jerusalem at Pentecost
As he ascended into Heaven,
two angels stood in his place
and advised them, fishermen,
tax collectors, prostitutes, and
others to tell them to tell this
story of the One’s ascension
into Heaven
for generations to await
The One’s coming again.
