The Time Between Lightning & Thunder

by Jake Hawkey

We find it hard
explaining
suffering
unsolicited
unwarranted

good things happening
to bad people
bad things happening
to good people

but God is infinite
unfathomable
compassionate

& by humble estimates
peace could be here
tomorrow
if each reached
their potential today

the only real question is
how can we allow for
each other a spring?

rain is God’s happy
& sad tears
sustaining

lightning is God’s doubt
flashing in the mirror
every time we don’t
assemble potential

then thunder is God
moving furniture
to understand
from a newer
perspective

for Sonnie
