Baby Swallows

by Mark Weinrich

Daily,
instances of wonder
draw me back
to the Wildlife Rescue…

Where baby swallows
shiver with excitement
tiny storms as I
approach their cage.
Once every hour
they bear this furious
hunger, quenched only
by 4 or 5 mealworms.
Amidst the chaos, one storm
is stilled, then another. Once
they are satisfied, the wind
and waves cease.
There’s almost
a reverent hush.

In that moment
a brimming over thrill
speaks to me
that I should live
with such jubilance;
with the same enthusiastic
hunger, not for physical
food, but with desperate
delight for the wealth
of God’s promises.
“They that hunger and
thirst for righteousness
will be filled.”
