Like Jonah

by Mark Weinrich

Selfishness like a womb
cushions against the outside.
We can fall asleep
feeling safety below,
unaware, like Jonah
that those above are sinking.

Like Jonah,
we were rescued
from the beast of our rebellion,
to reach beyond ourselves,
to seek the Lord
for the Ninevehs around us.

Mark Weinrich lives a creative life as a writer, photographer, musician, and artist—all wrapped together in an outdoorsman. He is a retired pastor and nine-year cancer survivor.
